The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft currently operates 75 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros. The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, located in Erlangen, is the largest institute of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft with more than 1 200 employees.

Welcome to the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, headquartered in Erlangen! As the largest institute within the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, we have been conducting research for over 30 years across diverse fields, including artificial intelligence, microelectronics, sensor systems, data acquisition, signal processing, and signal transmission. Talented individuals from various engineering and natural science disciplines will find a wide range of exciting research topics under one roof. A few highlights that reflect our innovative strength include neuromorphic computing, 5G/6G mobile communication technologies, generative AI in speech and signal processing, and X-ray imaging for e-mobility. And that’s just the beginning! What sustainable solution will you find with us?

Here's how you will make a difference

Our Smart Sensing and Electronics (SSE) and Communications Systems (KS) divisions are driving the development of new technologies for artificial intelligence. In the field of neuromorphic computing, we focus on developing highly specialised, energy-efficient hardware architectures as well as implementing robust and adaptive algorithms for deep neural networks (DNNs) and spiking neural networks (SNNs).

We want to further strengthen our ambitious, cross-site neuromorphic computing team and are looking for highly motivated experts who want to design, develop and implement intelligent systems for industrial applications.

  • Research and development of neuromorphic AI systems: You research, develop and optimize AI algorithms – particularly Spiking Neural Networks – as well as tools, methods and benchmarks for their design and simulation on neuromorphic hardware developed at Fraunhofer. In doing so, you implement robust and resilient neuromorphic system solutions for edge applications such as communication systems, autonomous systems or Industry 4.0.
  • Hardware-software co-design and interdisciplinary collaboration: You work closely with other neuromorphic computing experts (e.g., hardware developers) and the teams in Erlangen. In this advanced co-design workflow, you create optimal system solutions and actively contribute your own ideas to the further development of future hardware concepts.
  • Technical project management and strategic participation: After thorough onboarding, you assume technical project leadership of research and development projects and guide project staff on technical matters. You contribute to the elaboration of technical aspects of project proposals and contribute to the visibility of the Neuromorphic Computing research topic through public outreach.

What you bring to the table

  • Completed university degree with specialization in Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Artificial Intelligence or Neuroinformatics.
  • Practical experience in implementing and training Spiking Neural Networks and their execution on neuromorphic hardware.
  • Profound programming skills in Python; advantageous: additional programming languages (C++, C#, Julia or similar).
  • Ability to translate current scientific findings into applicable solutions, as well as the ability to independently evaluate ideas and work in a structured manner.
  • Ability to quickly familiarize yourself with new technical-scientific contexts.
  • Excellent English skills as well as good German skills, or willingness to learn German.
  • Willingness to travel to national and international events (e.g., conferences, workshops, and project meetings) as well as to attend team meetings at our location in Erlangen regularly.

What you can expect

  • Meaningful work: Through your participation in diverse projects with high practical relevance in the field of Embedded AI, you can actively shape the future topic of Edge AI and Neuromorphic Hardware.
  • We take your needs seriously: We support your work-life balance by offering flexible working hours and hybrid work.
  • Top of the line infrastructure at your workplace: With our state-of-the-art technologies, we develop solutions to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow.
  • Your scientific network: We offer you broad networking opportunities within the Fraunhofer Institute as well as participation in active contacts with several universities.
  • Your goals and interests are important to us: We offer ongoing professional and personal seminars, coaching, and language classes.

The position is initially limited to 2 years with the aim of extending it subsequently. The weekly working time is 39 hours. The position can also be filled on a part-time basis.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation, and identity. Appointment, remuneration, and social security benefits based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD).

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
