Here's how you will make a difference

The »Audio and Media Technologies« division of the Fraunhofer IIS is one of the world’s largest research organizations in the field of audio, speech, and media processing. For more than 30 years, Fraunhofer IIS has been a pioneer in audio and imaging technologies. From the invention of MP3 to its key role in the development of AAC, systems and technologies developed in Erlangen are now integrated into almost all consumer electronics devices worldwide. A new generation of cutting-edge media technologies, such as MPEG-H Audio, is setting new industry standards. More than 300 engineers and scientists develop state-of-the-art technologies that are licensed globally.

  • Research & Development: You develop deep learning–based technologies to enhance audio quality in broadcasting and streaming applications.
  • Accessibility & Personalization: You develop methods to make audio content accessible to all users and to allow individual customization.
  • Collaboration & Practical Application: You work on projects with broadcasters and streaming providers to implement deep neural networks in real-world environments.
  • Machine Learning: You research and implement innovative machine learning concepts for the efficient extraction and optimization of speech from final audio mixes.
  • Social Impact: You improve the intelligibility of dialogue in films, news, and television programs, thereby enhancing the quality of life for people with hearing impairments or speech comprehension difficulties.

What you bring to the table

  • Completed academic degree (Master’s, PhD, or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Engineering, Media Technologies, Neuroscience, or a related field.
  • Proven expertise in machine learning and deep neural networks.
  • Strong knowledge of digital audio signal processing, particularly in speech processing.
  • Solid programming skills in Python and PyTorch, experience with C/C++ is desirable.
  • Fluent English for effective collaboration in an international team.
  • A strong record of scientific publications and/or relevant industry experience is considered an advantage.

The position is initially limited to 2 years with the aim of extending it subsequently. The weekly working time is 39 hours. The position can also be filled on a part-time basis, with a preference, however, to have it filled as close to a full-time position as possible.
