The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, located in Erlangen, is the largest institute of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft with more than 1 200 employees.

Welcome to the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, headquartered in Erlangen! As the largest institute within the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, we have been conducting research for over 30 years in diverse fields such as artificial intelligence, microelectronics, sensor systems, data acquisition, signal processing, and signal transmission. Talented individuals from various engineering and natural science disciplines will find a wide range of exciting research topics under one roof. A few highlights that reflect our innovative strength include neuromorphic computing, 5G/6G mobile communication technologies, generative AI in speech and signal processing, and X-ray imaging for e-mobility. And that’s just the beginning! What sustainable solution will you find with us?

Would acting as a multiplier for tomorrow’s Low Power Wide Area-technology appeal to you? Then take a look and see if our offer is the right fit for you.

Here's how you will make a difference

Our international team is shaping the future of IoT by developing cutting edge solutions for wireless data transmission such as mioty®, a leading LPWAN standard. mioty® is deployed across a wide range of applications, from smart metering and smart buildings to industrial IoT and building automation.
As a Field Application Engineer based Nuremberg, you will be the technical spearhead bringing our international customer projects to live. You design solution architectures, implement and commission pilot projects, conduct on site proofs of concept, and guide customers from early evaluations through full scale integration into operational systems internationally.

  • Pilot Projects, PoCs & Operations: You plan, execute, and support mioty® pilot projects and proof-of-concept deployments, including on-site commissioning, troubleshooting, and live operation support.
  • End-to-End Solution Architecture: You design and validate end-to-end IoT solution architectures for industrial and smart city use cases, covering devices, connectivity, network infrastructure, backend systems and cloud integration.
  • Field Engineering & Validation: You conduct site surveys, RF and coverage assessments, device onboarding, network debugging, and acceptance testing.
  • Technical Enablement & Support: You provide hands-on technical guidance to customers and partners and troubleshoot, analyze, and resolve technical issues across pilots, integration phases, and live operations.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration & Product Feedback: You collaborate closely with Fraunhofer IIS engineering and business development teams to feed field insights into product roadmaps, feature enhancements, documentation, and quality improvements.
  • Industry Representation & Travel: You represent mioty® and Fraunhofer IIS at trade shows, industry events, and technical forums across Asia, Europe and the U.S., with frequent travel for customer engagements and project support.

What you bring to the table

  • University degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Engineering or a closely related technical field.
  • Experience in IoT or wireless systems engineering, ideally in field or applications engineering roles with pre- and post-sales involvement and hands-on deployment of real-world solutions.
  • Strong understanding of IoT technology stacks, covering embedded devices and firmware/MCUs, gateways and network-/application management, cloud APIs, data pipelines and security principles.
  • Excellent communication and customer‑facing skills, enabling you to translate technical requirements into solution designs, conduct workshops, create clear technical documentation and mentor customer teams.
  • Self‑driven, analytical problem-solving skills with structured troubleshooting abilities and confidence working independently in field environments.
  • Willingness to travel globally including short‑notice on‑site support for pilots, commissioning and customer engagements.
  • Fluent English and German (spoken and written), additional languages (Hindi, Mandarin, Japanese) are an advantage.
