The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is one of the world’s leading applied research organizations. 75 institutes develop cutting-edge technologies for our economy and society – more precisely: 32 000 people working in technology, science, administration and IT. They know: If you join Fraunhofer, then you are able to promote change. For themselves, for us and for the markets of today and tomorrow.

Welcome to Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS! As the largest institute within the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, we have been conducting research for over 30 years in diverse fields such as artificial intelligence, microelectronics, sensor systems, data collection, signal processing and transmission. Talents from various engineering and natural science disciplines will find a wide range of exciting research topics under a single roof. A few highlights that reflect our innovative strength: Neuromorphic computing, 5G/6G mobile communication technologies, generative AI in speech and signal processing, and X-ray imaging for e-mobility. And that’s just the beginning!
Which sustainable solutions will you find with us?

Here’s how you will make a difference

The Innovation & Transformation division focuses on AI-driven knowledge management in research and industrial projects. Our work centers on two main areas: Human AI and Smart Circular Economy. In this context, we develop automated systems for knowledge management, knowledge extraction, and decision support, which we provide to companies and public organizations.

  • Cutting-Edge Technology Application: You work with the latest technologies in industrial and research projects, focusing on generative AI, machine learning, and transformer models.
  • Innovative AI Solutions Development: You develop innovative AI solutions using Large Language Models (LLMs) such as GPT-5, BERT, or Google Gemini.
  • Data Transformation and RAG Systems: You transform unstructured, domain-specific data into vector databases and build application-oriented Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems.
  • Optimization Techniques for LLMs: You apply fine-tuning, prompt engineering, and other techniques to maximize the accuracy and performance of LLMs.
  • Data Integration and Knowledge Structuring: You support data integration, ETL processes, and the modeling and structuring of knowledge.
  • Web Applications and Chatbot Interfaces: You develop web applications and interfaces for chatbot systems and knowledge management tools.
  • Data Interpretation and AI Use Case Development: You actively contribute to data interpretation and bring ideas for new AI use cases.

What you bring to the table

  • You are currently pursuing a Master’s degree (minimum 1st semester) in Computer Science, Business Informatics, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or Software Engineering.
  • You have initial practical experience in Machine Learning, Generative AI, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and AI algorithms.
  • You possess strong programming skills in Python, including proficiency in libraries such as pandas, numpy, scikit-learn, transformers, PyTorch, sentence-transformers, and spaCy.
  • You have either first experience or a keen interest in Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and Agentic-RAG, including text preprocessing, chunking, embeddings, semantic search, reranking, and output tuning.
  • You possess initial experience in developing web applications and APIs using Flask, FastAPI, Streamlit, or REST APIs.
  • You can confidently use modern development environments/IDEs (e.g., Visual Studio Code).
  •  You are a reliable team player with a high motivation to learn and strong engagement.
  • You are interested in a long-term collaboration (minimum 6 months).

What you can expect

  • Organize your schedule: Benefit from flexible working hours that are perfectly compatible with your studies.
  • Become part of a creative team: Experience an open and friendly working atmosphere in which your ideas are valued.
  • Variety that inspires: Look forward to divers tasks that inspire and challenge you.
  • Shape the future with us: Take part in application-oriented research and put your theoretical knowledge to practice.
  • Innovation that inspires: Exciting and pioneering projects that make a real difference.

We will agree your start date and weekly working hours with you individually (as a working student 15 to 20 hours per week). You can reduce your hours before exams and increase them during semester breaks. You can set your working days flexibly. After your studies, there are attractive opportunities to join the institute on a full-time or part-time basis. You can flexibly determine the working days of your fixed-term employment contract.

We would be happy to offer you the opportunity to write a master's thesis in cooperation with us in the above-mentioned subject area. The thesis will be assigned and carried out in accordance with the rules of your university. For this reason, please discuss the thesis with a professor who can advise you over the course of the project.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled people are given preference if they are equally qualified.
