The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.de) currently operates 76 institutes and research facilities in Germany and is the world's leading organization for application-oriented research. Around 30,000 employees work on the annual research volume of 2.9 billion euros.

Adaptivity is an essential property for the connected world of tomorrow. Intelligent components can independently recognize changes in their environment or within themselves, assess them and take appropriate action. As business partner, Fraunhofer IIS/EAS develops key technologies for adaptive systems and offers innovative and robust solutions.

What you do with us
In an interdisciplinary team of physicists, nanoelectronics specialists and hardware/software programmers, you will take part in building components for quantum communication systems. These systems employ photons to exchange a secure key, and manipulating the light quanta requires control of technologically advanced components. In this particular position, you will contribute to an exciting teamwork by integrating an FPGA-based time-to-digital-converter in quantum communication setups, and by developing embedded firmware. This work opens the opportunity to directly get involved in the transfer of a quantum technology into a practical application.

What you bring along
  • Master‘s degree (or higher) in electrical engineering, information systems engineering, computer science, or a related field
  • Excellent skills in designing with VHDL, Verilog or SystemVerilog and verification/ simulation
  • Strong experience in FPGA design flow, including troubleshooting and performance optimization of FPGA designs
  • Proficiency in programming Python and/or C/C++
  • Experience with Zynq platforms, embedded Linux or ASIC design is a plus
  • Experience in PCB design is a plus
  • Background in quantum mechanics or quantum communication advantageous
  • Motivation to take responsibility, to drive a topic within an interdisciplinary team and to discuss requirements with industrial users
  • Enthusiasm to participate in dissemination activities (publications, presentations, project acquisition, industrial fairs)
What you can expect from us
  • Attractive creative work environment in a highly innovative key industry
  • Working in a dedicated and motivated team
  • Regular training tailored to your individual needs and the best possible operating equipment
  • A cooperative corporate culture
  • Work-life balance through e.g. flexible working hours and support services
