The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

The »Audio and Media Technologies« division of the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS in Erlangen has been shaping the globally deployed standards and technologies in the fields of audio and moving picture production for over 30 years. Starting with the creation of MP3 and continuing with the co-development of AAC and the Digital Cinema Initiative test plan, almost all consumer electronic devices, computers and mobile phones are equipped with systems and technologies from Erlangen today.

Meanwhile, a new generation of best-in-class media technologies is elevating the user experience to new heights. Always keeping an eye on market requirements, the Fraunhofer IIS team develops technologies that create memorable moments.

What you will do

You keep playing with the idea of doing a PhD and digital signal processing is your topic?

Then our topic »New digital signal processing approaches for next generation video coders« will inspire you!
The scope of your PhD thesis will include developing, implementing and testing new signal processing algorithms for improved video codecs.

In detail:

  • Development of new transforms that can replace Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and provide quality improvement over existing video coding standards.
  • Integration of the new transform into an image/video coding framework with rate/distortion optimization for controlling the encoder decisions.
  • Adaptation of the tools already existing in the framework and development of new tools needed for the integration of the new transform.
  • Objective and subjective quality comparison with state-of-the-art image/video codecs.

The aim is to develop »general purpose video codecs« that can be employed for both streaming and communication applications.

What you bring to the table

  • Master's degree in electrical engineering, computer science or a related discipline
  • Profound knowledge of digital signal processing for audio and/or video
  • Willingness to be on site in Erlangen or Ilmenau at least twice a week
  • Strong written and oral communication skills as well as excellent spoken and written English

What you can expect
