The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3 billion euros.

The »Audio and Media Technologies« division of the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS in Erlangen has been shaping the globally deployed standards and technologies in the fields of audio and moving picture production for over 30 years. Starting with the creation of MP3 and continuing with the co-development of AAC and the Digital Cinema Initiative test plan, almost all consumer electronic devices, computers and mobile phones are equipped with systems and technologies from Erlangen today.

Meanwhile, a new generation of best-in-class media technologies is elevating the user experience to new heights. Always keeping an eye on market requirements, the Fraunhofer IIS team develops technologies that create memorable moments.

Would you like to advance and develop audio solutions on relevant hardware and software platforms together with us and do you have expertise in DSP implementation?

Then we look forward to welcoming you as a new member of our research team!

What you will do

Have you ever heard of Fraunhofer Cingo®? If not, that's not a big deal, of course.

Fraunhofer Cingo® offers premium 3D audio playback quality over headphones. The technology enables immersive audio experiences by placing virtual audio objects around the listener. Cingo® is an established rendering solution for media such as music and movies or for the simulation of interactive audio environments in virtual and augmented reality.

Smart personal audio devices such as true-wireless headphones with increasingly powerful DSPs and sensors enable the implementation of advanced rendering solutions such as Cingo® directly on the device.

The sustainable development of this target platform requires the resource-efficient implementation of algorithms on headphone DSPs.

To complement our team, we are looking for a passionate software engineer with knowledge in DSP implementation to advance our audio solutions on relevant hardware (e.g. Airoha, BES) and software platforms (e.g. AudioWeaver from DSP Concepts).

Your tasks in detail:

  • Together with the team you will work on efficient audio signal processing for usage on next generation hearables.
  • You will contribute to the fixed-point/embedded DSP implementation of audio algorithms.
  • You will develop skills in code optimisation (complexity, memory consumption) for embedded systems.
  • You will work with the team to integrate next generation audio algorithms into hardware demonstrators for trade shows and industry partners.

What you bring to the table

  • University degree in electrical engineering, information technology, computer science, or in a related field.
  • Interest in contributing to and working on creative ideas in the field of audio-processing for hearables.
  • Knowledge of digital (audio) signal processing.
  • Confidenct programming in C/C++.
  • Experience in programming for embedded systems (e.g. ARM Cortex A/M, Tensilica Hifi, Qualcomm Kalimba/Hexagon).
  • Optional: Interest in optimising and deploying machine learning algorithms for application in embedded systems on next generation hearables.

We are also happy to welcome applications of committed Junior Professionals with basic knowledge and first practical experience from internships, student research projects or final theses.

What you can expect

Fraunhofer is not only the largest organization for applied research (application-oriented research organisation) in Europe, but also a top-rated employer. But why?
